Although not much is known about The Honourable Samuel Saltus Ingham II' s life, it is assumed that he continued in his father's maritime trade business. Whereas his father, who had also pursued a parallel political career, reached the position of Member of the Colonial Legislature, his son became head of the Legislature: he occupied the position of Speaker of the House of Assembly for a full twenty years between 1875 and 1895. The Speaker enjoyed a salary of ?00 per annum and presided over a House of 36 members, representing the different "tribes" or districts of the island.

Margaret Leaycraft was from another well-known Bermudian family who have been on the island since about 1650, shortly after it was first colonized by the Somers Island Company; with her he had 13 children. Possibly worn out by the requirements of giving birth to and nurturing so many offspring, Margaret Richardson Ingham (nee Leaycraft), died relatively young, at the age of 58, having had her youngest child Fairlie at the unusually advanced age of 44. Five years after her death, when Samuel Saltus Ingham II was a full sixty eight years of age, he remarried - to an American woman many years his junior - and had three more children.

Finally, it is known that two years before his death he revoked the legacy to his son Fairlie, but it is not known the reason for this.

"Samuel Saltus Ingham junior was born about 1817. I can find no baptism record for him or his siblings in Bermuda. It is possible that he was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where his father, I think, ran a Bermuda-based shipping business.

He married 1. Margaret Leaycraft on the 27th May 1841 in Southampton Parish, Bermuda. He married 2. Mary Howard Olney, 21st February 1884.

He was Speaker of the House of Assembly in Bermuda from 1873 to 1895. He died at his home, Mangroville, in Paget on 3rd September 1900. I have a good photo of his portrait, if you would like to contact me. His sister, Frances "Dora" Ingham was my great great grandmother.

His father was also named Samuel Saltus Ingham and was the Member of the Colonial Parliament for Southampton Parish. He died 18 April 1849 at his home, Radnor, in Southampton. I have a copy of his will.
