Cerdic KING OF WESSEX AND 1ST KING OF WEST SAXONS ( -534)

1. Cerdic KING OF WESSEX AND 1ST KING OF WEST SAXONS, son of King Arthur (or Riothamus) ( - ), died in 0534.

"In 495 came two leaders into Britain, Cerdic and Cynric his son, with five ships, at a place that is called Cerdic's-ore. And they fought with the Welsh the same day. Then he died, and his son Cynric succeeded to the government, and held it six and twenty winters. Then he died; and Ceawlin, his son, succeeded, who reigned seventeen years." (Avalon Project).

Cerdic was crowned at Winchester in 532, though he may have begun ruling in 519.

Cerdic is first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle after he lands at Hampshire in 495. In 519 he gained a great victory at Charford, "but Hengest and Adelle's men had touched hardly more than the coast, and the true conquest of Southern Britain was reserved for a fresh band of Saxons, a tribe known as the Gewissas, who landed under Cerdic and his son Cynric on the shores of the Southampton Water, and pushed in 495 to the great Downs of Gwent where Winchester offered so rich a prize. Nowhere was the strife fiercer than here; and it was not till 519 that a decisive victory at Charford ended the struggle for the Gwent and set the crown of the West-Saxons on the head of Cerdic."

According to Tompsett, 2003, Cerdic's ancestry is not Arthur, but through several generations back to Odin or Woden http://www.alyniarule.com/genealogy/cerdic.htm.
