Earl Archibald DOUGLAS (c. 1325-1400)

1. Earl Archibald DOUGLAS, son of James DOUGLAS (bef1298-1330), was born circa 1325. He had the title '3rd Earl of Douglas'. He married Joan MORAY after 23 July 1362. He died on [Julian] 24 December 1400 in Threave, Scotland. He was buried in Bothwell Castle, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

 

He was also known as Archibald 'the Grim'. He fought in the Battle of Poitiers on 19 September 1356.3 He held the office of Lord Warden of the Marches between 1368 and 1400.3 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Douglas [S., 1358] on 14 August 1388.1 He held the office of Conservator of a peace with the English on 16 July 1390.3.

 

Joan MORAY, daughter of Sir Morice MORAY ( - ) and Joan MENTEITH ( - ), was born between 1339 and 1354. She died between 1403 and 1409. She and Archibald DOUGLAS had the following children:

2. Earl Archibald DOUGLAS, son of Earl Archibald DOUGLAS and Joan MORAY, was born circa 1370. He had the title '4th Earl Douglas'. He died on [Julian] 17 August 1424. He married Margaret STEWART.

 

Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas also went by the nick-name of Archibald 'Tyneman'. He held the office of Lord Warden of the Marches in 1400.2 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Douglas [S., 1358] circa 24 December 1400.2 He fought in the invasion of England by the Scots in 1401, which he commanded.2 He fought in the Battle of Homildon Hill on 14 September 1402, where he was wounded in 5 places, lost an eye, and was taken prisoner by Henry Hotspur, whom he afterwards joined in a rebellion against King Henry IV.2 He gained the title of Lord of Annandale in 1409.5 He was created 1st Duc de Touraine [France] on 19 April 1424.5 He fought in the Battle of Verneuil on 17 August 1424, fighting against the Duke of Bedford.5.

 

Lady Margaret STEWART Lady of Galloway, daughter of King Robert III (John) Stewart KING OF SCOTLAND (1337-1406) and Annabel DRUMMOND (c. 1350-c. 1401), was born between 1367 and 1401. She had the title 'Lady of Galloway'. She died between 1450 and 1456. She and Archibald DOUGLAS had the following children:

3. Elizabeth DOUGLAS, daughter of Earl Archibald DOUGLAS and Lady Margaret STEWART Lady of Galloway, was born between 1385 and 1401. She died before 1451. She married William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney.

 

Lord William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney 3rd Earl Orkney, 1st Earl Caithness, son of Henry Sinclair, 2nd Earl of ORKNEY (c. 1375-1422) and Egidia DOUGLAS ( - ), was born before [Julian] February 1420. He had the title '3rd Earl Orkney, 1st Earl Caithness'. He had the title '3rd Earl Orkney, 1st Earl Caithness, 1st Lord Sinclair, Chancellor'. He died between 1476 and 1482. He died in 1480. He and Elizabeth DOUGLAS had the following children:

William Sinclair, 2nd Lord Sinclair (bef1403-1487). William was born before 1403. He had the title '2nd Lord Sinclair'. He died on [Julian] 14 July 1487.
