George MURRAY (1826-1857)

1. George Don MURRAY, son of Major General James Patrick 2 MURRAY (1782-1834) and Elizabeth RUSHWORTH (1783-1865), was born on 10 March 1826 in Westmeath, Ireland. He was a Sailor. He died on 12 August 1857 in Athlone, Ireland.

His youngest brother George Don was born at Killinure House on 10th March 1826. He entered the Royal Navy and was promoted Lieutenant after an unusual act of bravery in New Zealand. The citation read " while serving as a midshipman of the North Star commanded a subdivision of seamen and was severely wounded in an attack made in January 1846 on a pah belonging to a rebel chief named Kawati at Ruapikapita in New Zealand, which was assaulted and carried in a most gallant manner after a severe action of four hours" He served on the Prince Regent, the Neptune and the Vengeance. He saw service in China and the Crimea and won medals in both campaigns. These medals survive in the family possessions. He died at Rossanna House 12th August 1857 unmarried and without issue. He was buried in Benowen Churchyard.
George was given his second name, Don, after his godfather, Gen. Sir George Don GCB who was the husband of Maria, Gen. James' niece. (see separate story). JPM had been an ADC to Gen Don at one stage in his career.

His sponsors were Sir George Don, his wife and also his 19 year old brother Pulteney (Showing that they were hard pressed to find sponsors for him after so many siblings!) - see letter.
